Volunteer
All Joseph House programs and services depend on volunteers. Our volunteers come from all ages and backgrounds.
Volunteering is an excellent way to live and deepen your faith, meet people with similar values, learn new skills, and help create a community where the poor and needy are not forgotten.

Volunteers can choose times that are convenient for them within the stated hours of operation of each site.

A social service center for families in crisis
Financial Assistance Interviewer
Needed Tuesday – Thursday, from 8:45 am – 12 noon
– Interview people requesting financial help for rent, utilities, etc.
– Assess the situation, verify information with creditors, and make recommendations to the supervisor
– Be a consoling and compassionate presence to people in crisis
– Encourage people to make positive changes in their lives when necessary
– Record relevant information in client files
Food Line Interviewer
Needed Tuesday – Thursday, from 8:45 am – 12 noon
– Sign in people requesting help from the Food Pantry
– Determine their eligibility to receive assistance
– Help people with paperwork and other forms when necessary
Food Pantry Worker
Needed Tuesday – Thursday, from 8:45 am – 12 noon
– Help prepare and distribute grocery bags of food
– Unload shipments of food and restock pantry supplies
– May require some light to moderate lifting, but not absolutely necessary in order to work here
Hospitality Room Assistant
Needed Monday – Friday, from 8:00 am – 12:30 pm
– Greet men and women entering the Hospitality Room, a day shelter for the homeless
– Assist with laundry and shower facilities, meals and clothing needs
– Be a supportive and listening presence

Representative Payee Service

– Write checks from the client’s account for payment of bills; Little Sisters are check signers
Good Neighbor Program

– Accompany Little Sisters and other volunteers on home visits to the infirm
– Run errands and assist with general care and light housekeeping as needed
Thanksgiving Food Drive
– Sort donated non-perishable food in the Crisis Center pole barn on the Saturday before Thanksgiving
Christmas Toy Giveaway
Flexible hours
– Sort donated toys and prepare gift bags in the Crisis Center pole barn
– Help with the distribution of gifts during the last full week before Christmas
RESIDENT VOLUNTEERS
Salisbury, Maryland
Men and women age 21 years and older can be resident volunteers, a full-time position with stipend and benefits. They share in the ministry and community life of the Little Sisters. Resident volunteers may be single, married, widowed, or divorced (they cannot have the care of dependent children). Catholic religious are also welcome.
Applicants should be practicing Christians. Previous work and volunteer experience are helpful. All gifts and skills can be used. Resident volunteers live in community with other volunteers and/or religious. The normal term of service is one year. May be renewed. A completed application, references, and personal interview are required.
