COVID-19 UPDATE: The Soup Kitchen at the Joseph House Crisis Center is CLOSED until further notice. The other services of the Crisis Center— Food Pantry, Hospitality Room, and Financial Assistance—will continue, but a limited number of people are being admitted at a time to allow for social distancing.
We appreciate your cooperation as we enact these measures for the sake of public health.
For more information, please call the Crisis Center at 410-749-4239.
If you need help with food or paying a bill, please go to the JOSEPH HOUSE CRISIS CENTER. Assistance is not given at the Little Sisters’ convent. The Crisis Center provides Financial Assistance, a Food Pantry, and a Dining Room. There is also a Hospitality Room for men and women who are homeless.
Hours: Hours vary by department. See below for information.
Location: 812 Boundary Street, Salisbury, Maryland.
Scroll down for a map (note: County Shop Road is the same as Boundary Street).
You can apply for help in paying a bill on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.
Please arrive by 8:00 a.m. to draw a number for a lottery that determines the order in which clients will be seen. We cannot accept appointments. There are no residency requirements in order to apply for help. In other words, it does not matter where you live, although you must apply in person.
You need to bring a photo ID and proof of your income and expenses. This means pay stubs, benefit letters, bills, and receipts.
To receive rental assistance, a court-ordered eviction notice is required. To receive help with a rental deposit, a lease agreement or a letter from a landlord is required. To receive help with a utility bill (electric, gas, or water), a cut-off notice is required. We will consider any other request for help as long as you can document your need.
We will do our best to help you get through your crisis. There is, however, no guarantee that we can assist you. You may be referred to another agency if that agency has funds available. The Joseph House is for people who have no other options.
If we can help you with a financial need, it is usually once per year. If you need additional help, we can assist you in finding other resources.
Families with dependent children need to bring proof from the Department of Social Services that they have applied there for emergency assistance.
The Pantry is open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. If you need help from the Food Pantry, please bring a photo ID, proof of your income, and a Social Security card for every member of your household.
Due to increased demand, only residents of Wicomico County can receive food from the Food Pantry. Each eligible household can receive food one time per month.
The Crisis Center serves a hot meal between 10:30 a.m. and noon every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The meals are available for anyone.
Update: As mentioned above, the Dining Room is currently closed.
The Hospitality Room is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is only for men and women who are homeless. Shower and laundry services are available. Please use the side entrance at the Crisis Center.
Men who are homeless who wish to enter the Joseph House Workshop can speak with a Hospitality Room volunteer at the Crisis Center. They can also call the Workshop at 410-749-8150.
