An Artistic Remembrance

The Joseph House Workshop is a long-term, residential program for men who were homeless. It helps them develop new skills as they begin new lives.

Sr. Virginia’s art classes are a valuable component of the program. They provide our residents with a creative avenue for personal growth. Art is a healthy means of self-expression, and the act of making something can be healing.

Carl, the newest resident at the Joseph House Workshop, is a man of many skills and talents. He lost his sister recently, and in just a few days he produced this large colored drawing for his butterfly-loving niece in honor of her mother, who was always finding butterfly-themed gifts for her.

Butterflies are a delicate symbol of the Resurrection: from the tomb-like chrysalis emerges something new and wonderful. We are proud of Carl and all of the men in the program. It is an honor to receive the stories they tell and be a companion on their journeys.
